Leopold von Sacher-Masoch; Buchholz, Franz (illustrations); Glassco, John (translator, introduction). Venus in Furs. Burnaby, B.C.: Blackfish Press, 1977. 1st Edition. 110 pp. 8vo. Illus. First thus. Near Fine. Soft cover.

In 1973 Canadian poet, memoirist, literary trouble-maker (and pornographer for hire) John Glassco produced what is considered the first proper English translation of this erotic classic. It is tame by today's standards, but remains an important document in the history of the sexual imagination. Venus in Furs is a notorious book. Known in part for being the namesake of the term sadomasochism (Leopold von Sacher-Masoch was the author), as well as the inspiration for the Velvet Underground song of the same name, it is easily the literary source for all sorts of erotic nuisance and misunderstood behaviour.
