Jackson, Shirley. The Road Through the Wall. New York: Farrar, Straus and Company, 1948. First Edition. 271 pp. 8vo. Jacket price-clipped, with small chips and tears in edges. Author's first book. Fine in very good dust-jacket. Hardcover.

Jackson is best known for her amazing and creepy books such as The Haunting of Hill House and We Have Always Lived in the Castle. Her first published book was The Road Through the Wall, a suburban satire where a lovely suburban street is upended when the wall separating it from the seedier side of town is dismantled to make room for a new freeway. The book has more in common with her domestic tales such as Life Among the Savages, and less with her spooky ones, but it is told with her one-and-only mix of observation and humour
